Overview
It’s all about the gold
About 14 km East of Warburton on the Woods Point Road, near McMahons Creek are the Little Peninsula and Big Peninsula Tunnels. As with so much of our history, the tunnels came into being because of the Gold Rush when the Yarra River was diverted to make it easier for gold miners to search for gold.
The Little Peninsula Tunnel can be accessed via an upper or a lower carpark. If you’re not keen on stairs then taking the lower carpark is a good option plus it has a grassy picnic area and good access to the river.
The Big Peninsula tunnel is further down Woods Point Road towards McMahons Creek. It is signposted but doesn’t appear to have the same amount of carparking area as the Little Peninsula Tunnel. Whichever side of the tunnel you want to visit in this case involves stairs. The left hand side has a nice grassy picnic area and what looks like a very inviting place to swim in the Summer.
