About Us

One was a slightly successful professional musician and the other a university graduate when Garrick Hicks and Meaghan Grace met, fell in love and started a journey together that would see their careers change and paths cross many fields of endeavour. The year was 1994 and the opportunities plentiful. Wanting a change from their inner Melbourne lives and after countless ‘weekend drives’ exploring, they moved to the Dandenong’s and in the process their work lives as well.

Garrick had been a full time musician for nearly 13 years but had grown weary of the road and the relentless ‘missed opportunities’ whilst Meaghan worked as a manager for small and large corporate health food and supplements chains. An opportunity through Meaghan’s contacts saw Garrick start and build a long term career with one of Australia’s largest sports supplement companies…but both were growing restless and desired a much more fulfilling and healthier direction.

Tea! It was always there. It was a constant in both their lives and something they considered themselves to be fairly expert in. So, with a two year old daughter and another one on the way, they formed Peoplewell P/L and launched two new brands, both with ACO Certified Organic status and both premium lines. The result was the Yarra Valley Tea Company, their organic loose leaf tea and tisanes range and The Functional Beverage Co., organic brewed loose leaf bottled iced tea [and Australia’s first Certified Organic Herbal Iced Tea].

Their unique range of premium organic teas evolved from countless blending sessions, meetings with growers and customer feedback via in-store tastings and over two thousand farmers markets and festivals.
